Nanjing University (NJN, 南京大学) is one of the most prestigious national university in China. The university was founded 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School, then renamed as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, as well as the National Central University. The university celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002. Now the university has two campuses, one in Gulou and the other in Pukou, with a total area of about 600 acres. Its current President is Professor Jiang Shusheng, a physicist.
Nanjing university is always among the top universities in China according to various national and international higher education standards. For eight years in a roll, the number of articles cited by academic circles abroad ranked the highest among all Chinese universities. During the decade, Nanjing University has won over 40 national and over 700 ministerial and provincial awards. Since 1994 the university has been among the highest of all Chinese universities for the number of funded programs approved by the National Natural Sciences Fund and National Social Sciences Fund.
The university has 17 schools including 50 departments and research institutions, and it runs close to 400 undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, the university has nearly 40 prestigious disciplines, 6 national key laboratories and 11 national training bases. More than several hundred alumni of the university have been selected as winners for international, national, ministerial and provincial awards, and 30 professors have been chosen as the most respected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. In the published Chinese University Ranking 2004 2007, compiled by www.netbig.com, this university was ranked at top 3rd amid 686 - 715 selected Chinese universities. In the "Academic Ranking of Top 500 World Universities 2006 published by Shanghai Jiaotong University, the university is among the top three Chinese universities that are listed in the Top 500 universities worldwide.
Nanjing University has established its extensive international exchange and cooperation programs, set up links with more than 180 universities and institutions in thirty countries, employed nearly two thousands international scholars, and held more than 120 international conferences. The university has invited internationally renowned scientists including numerous Nobel laureates and political figures including presidents and prime ministers for speech. In the meantime, more than six-thousand international students have been accepted by various programs. |
