| Ranked on the top 20th among a thousand of China's national higher learning institutions, Southeast University (SEU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China, and the university has been listed as one of the Top 25 universities in the Project 211* and Project 985** by the State Planning Commission.
* Project 211 is a national program approved by the Chinese government that was started in 1995. The government substantially and intensively invests in about 100 prestigious universities selected from 1,794 higher learning institutions nationwide to improve their overall capacity.
** Project 985 is an even more ambitious national program approved by the government. It is China's World-Class University Project, in which a small number of top universities selected from the Project 211 further receive a high-level funding from the national government. There totally are 38 top universities been chosen. |

Derived originally from San jiang Normal School, which was founded in 1902, Southeast University (东南大学)has the same origin with Nanjing University and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002. Sanjiang Normal School was a base institution that was expanded and renamed as the National Central University during 1930s. Later the university was divided into numerous fractions during the restructuring period in 1952 under the direction of the newly established government, and each of those fractions was eventually shaped and enlarged to a major university.
Southeast University consists of 40 schools and departments, and it runs more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. The university has 1,500 full and associate professors and seven of them are among the most respected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering. It is one of the top 10 universities in scientific research and development in China. In the published Chinese University Ranking 2003-7, this university was ranked at top 20th-22nd among 686 - 715 selected universities.
The university has launched extensive international cooperation since its establishment during the 1950s. There have been over 4,000 faculty members and teachers participating in the international cooperation program, and as a result, the university has invited more than 3,500 international scholars and experts to visit its campus. The university has signed agreements with more than a hundred universities and research institutes worldwide for collaboration and over 1,400 international students have studied in its campus. |
